But according to one very old story, the reason was considerably darker.
Bridal attendants supposedly dressed like the bride to confuse evil spirits, jealous suitors—or even would-be kidnappers—who couldn't tell which woman was the one getting married.
It's a fantastic story.
There's just one problem.
