When I was growing up, my sister and I occasionally had a problem.
We had one television.
Unfortunately, her favorite show aired at the same time as mine.
Mine was Black Sheep Squadron.
Although, if I'm being completely truthful, my fascination with World War II aviation may have been helped considerably by Robert Conrad. 😂
Years later, I discovered something even better.
Pappy Boyington was real.
The Black Sheep were real.
The Corsairs were real.
But the ragtag collection of drunken misfits Hollywood gave us?
Well... that's where things get interesting.
The real VMF-214 fought its way into Marine Corps history in only 84 days, producing aces, destroying enemy aircraft and earning a Presidential Unit Citation.
And their commander eventually disappeared over the Pacific and was presumed dead.
He wasn't.
